ROMAN IRON PLUMBATA

Plumbatae or mattiobarbuli were lead-weighted darts carried by the Roman infantry.
The only written source for these tactical weapons is Vegetius, Epitoma Rei Militari (1.17). Cf. M. C. Bishop & J. C. N. Coulston, Roman Military Equipment, 2nd edition, p. 201, nos. 12 and 16.
