| Menander was one of the founders of the so-called New Comedy. His first play was Ogre, written in 321 BC and over the next 20 years wrote 100 additional comedies. Though not greatly appreciated in his lifetime, his reputation grew throughout the early Roman Imperial period. Plutarch wrote of him, Plautus and Terence imitated him, and Ovid thought him “worthy of immortality.” | |
