ROMAN BRONZE AND SILVER FALLEN LEGIONARY

Lying on his back, the soldier in full military costume wears a short tunic with a leather cuirass which, with the helmet, is decorated with elaborate silver linear inlays and floral ornaments; probably from a horse bridle intercise which crossed on the animal’s breast and was often decorated with battle scenes.

A bronze masterwork.

Cf. J. Paul Getty Museum, handbook of the Antiquities Collection, p. 38 for another bronze representation of a dead youth.

Ex private Austrian collection.
