AN IMPORTANT LARGE ROMAN BRONZE MEN, THE ANCIENT MOON GOD OF ANATOLIA His right arm raised to support a spear, his extended left hand holding a pine cone, and standing with his foot upon the severed head of a bull, and with an eagle, separately cast, at his feet; all resting upon the original bronze pedestal base. He wears a Phrygian cap, an ankle-length, long-sleeved garment tied at the waist, and a long cloak; eyes inlaid with silver. The spear is a later replacement. | Men was worshipped as far back as the 3rd millenium BC. One of the Men cult's most important centers, was the ancient city of Antiocheia. The sacred site of Men is located 5 km from Yalvaç. The temple can be dated back to the 4th century BC. As this statue it is lacking the usual crescent tips on the shoulders, this may be a local synthesis of Men with Attis. | |
