ATTIC BLACK-FIGURE PANEL AMPHORA, PROBABLY BY THE PAINTER OF BERLIN 1686 Two armed, nude warriors attack each other with spears. Rev: Hermes with raised kerykeion wears a chiton and cloak, a petasos on his head. On either side a bearded man dressed in chiton and cloak, holding a spear; nonsense inscriptions on both sides. Numerous details correspond to the Painter of Berlin 1686: ears, faces, petasoi (Naples Stg 116: Ahlberg-Cornell-1984, 112 III 2 B) and the nonsense inscriptions (e.g. on an amphora in Paris, Cabinet des Médailles 207: ABV 296, 6; CVA Bibl. Nat. (1) pl., 34, 3-5; Lissarague-1999, 85-86, ills. 66-67; or the amphora in Urbana-Champaign 70-9-3: CVA University of Illinois (1) pl. 9), which, however do not conform to the standard formula, Maxmin - 1986. There are, however, rather closer similarities to works by the Painter of London B 76-cf. the neck-amphora New York 56.171.16 (ABV 87, 14: CVA New York 4, pl. 12, 1-2) and the hydria Copenhagen inv. 13536 (Para. 32, 2bis: CVA Copenhagen 8, pls. 319-321).
