Athenian bronze allotment plate (pinakia)
ATHENIAN BRONZE ALLOTMENT PLATE (PINAKIA)

With Greek inscription: PISTOKLES MURRI [nonsioV]; every citizen eligible for jury service had one. At left is a maker’s stamp: ‘B’over a tripod.
For the type and date see: J.H. Kroll, Athenian bronze Allotment Plates, Harvard, 1972, pp. 87-90, nos. 78-113.

On the top left is a stamped B, under it trilobate stamp of a standing owl facing front with closed wings. Under it [A/HQ]. To the right, a Gorgoneion. Studies presented to Sterlin Dow (Durham in 1984) 165-171. 43.45 gs. With plates like this judges were drawn by lot in Athens for one day in each case (description of the so-called. Kleroterion with Demosth. 39, 10 following and Aristot. Ath. Pole. 63). The Triobol stamp references a state document. In this example the craftsman erred when instead of a lambda he inscribed an eta. Obviously, he noticed his mistake but did not correct it nor did he add the rest of the name. This indicates that the drilling was carried out before the engraving of the letters. - The owners of the plate, a certain Pistokles from the rich demo Myrrhinus (in the east Attica coast, today's Merenda), was not known up to now, see. P.M. Fraser - E. Matthews, A Lexicon of Greek staff Names, II: Attica, Oxford, 1994, p. 364.
